The aim is to draw cards totalling or come closer to 21 than the dealers' cards, without going bust by exceeding 21. All cards are counted at their face value, i.e. five of spades will count as 5. Kings, Queens and Jacks all have a face value of 10. Aces can count as 1 or 11, whichever makes a better hand for you. To begin each player makes a bet on their box by placing a chip/s on their allocated space. The players all receive two cards face up in turn, whist the dealer receives only one card face up. The players must then make decisions based on their two cards and the dealers' one card. If you do not wish to take anymore cards when the dealer asks, simply say 'stand' with a hand signal, by making a lateral motion over your card. If you feel that you could improve your hand by taking additional cards then say 'hit', and tap the felt with your finger. Once all players have made their decisions the dealer will then draw. The dealer draws on 16 but stands on 17. One variation in the game is a 'double down'. If you feel that you are in a position to beat the dealer and wish to increase your bet, it is possible by putting an equivalent amount of chips or less behind your original bet. Players may double down on any two cards. Another variation is to 'split pairs'. If your initial two cards are of the same face value (i.e. eight of spades and eight of clubs), you may split the cards into two separate hands by placing an equal bet on the side. You will then receive cards on your split pair and have to try and get as close to 21 as possible. To summarise the keys rules when playing blackjack, if your cards total closer to 21 than the dealers you will win, if you and the dealer have the same total you will push, and if you take cards and exceed 21 you will lose.
